In our Tour Spotlight series, each month we chat to one of our tour leader/guides to see what they love about one of our tours. Check out what Neri has to say about one of our newer and more adventurous tours - the Ningaloo Odyssey: 4-day Trek & Kayak Expedition.

What do you love about this tour?

I love the fact that we can share the incredible nature and wild places of Ningaloo with our guests, and we are doing completely under our own steam. Trekking/hiking and sea kayaking are the ultimate modes of slow-travel transportation, allowing us to be fully immersed in our environment. Putting in a bit of effort to get off the beaten track has the rewards of amazing campsites, deserted pristine rangelands, beaches and coastline, and snorkel sites that aren’t on any tourist map.

What can guests expect when they join the Ningaloo Odyssey: 4-Day Trek & Kayak Expedition?

You will definitely feel as if you’ve earned your sunset cheese platter at the end of the day! Though we try to strike a balance between adventure and small luxuries, exertion and relaxation. All activity equipment is supplied, including quality camping gear, trekking poles, kayaking and snorkelling gear and sun-safe clothing.

Partnering with Trek Ningaloo to run this tour is an absolute dream, and means that you will have an expert trekking guide from Trek Ningaloo for the first two days of the tour, and then meet up with your expert sea kayaking and snorkelling guide from Exmouth Adventure Co for the last two days.

Your tour will start with a two day trek, ascending the range along a spectacular gorge, before camping at a picturesque campsite on top of Cape Range, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The next day you walk down and across the coastal plain, to meet up with your sea kayaking guide mid-afternoon. After a quick change of clothing and equipment, refreshments and briefings, you’ll paddle to your wilderness beach camp for your second night camping. The next two days are spent sea kayaking and snorkelling your way along the sheltered turquoise lagoon of the Ningaloo coast. Following a third night camping amongst the sand dunes, you’ll finish up sea kayaking on the afternoon of day four, and be transported back to Exmouth town.

Any words of advice for people joining this tour?

Make the most of every moment! During the tour, make sure you take time out of each day to really take in the beauty of your surroundings and reflect on how important it is that we have these amazing wild places to enjoy. A small diary or journal is a great way to keep track of what you did and saw each day; a memory jogger for when you’re back home and reminder of the amazing journey that you have completed.

Also make sure you’re physically fit and prepared! Follow the training recommendations from Trek Ningaloo – if you’re good to go for the trek you’ll have no problem with the sea kayaking. If you’ve never snorkelled before, do some practice in calm, sheltered water to familiarise yourself with use of the equipment before you arrive.
